Which layer stops a whole-trailer theft?

A kingpin lock, and nothing else comes close. It is a cast steel cone that seats over the kingpin and locks there, so no fifth wheel can couple to the trailer at all. It does not slow the theft down — it removes the method. The thief backs under, discovers he cannot lock in, and now his options are a grinder in an open yard, at night, on a device made of ductile iron. Most crews simply leave and take the next trailer down the row.

Not all kingpin locks are equal, and the difference is the geometry. A flat plate style with an exposed shackle can be attacked with bolt cutters or defeated with a modified hitch.
