Ask ten drivers which CB to buy and you will get two answers delivered with the certainty of religious conviction. The Cobra 29 has been the default full-size radio in North American trucks for four decades. The Uniden Bearcat has been the enthusiast's answer for nearly as long. The argument between them has outlived the CD player, the paper log, and several waves of people announcing that CB is dead.

Strip out the loyalty and the technical differences are narrower than the argument suggests — but they are not zero, and one of them changes what the radio can physically do. Here is the honest split.

Does the built-in SWR meter matter?

More than anything else on either spec sheet. Standing wave ratio describes how much of your transmitted power is actually leaving the antenna versus reflecting back into the radio. A badly matched antenna does two things: it cripples your range, and at high SWR it can damage the finals in the transmitter.

This is the origin of nearly every "this radio is garbage" opinion in the trade. The radio was fine. The antenna was untuned, the coax was pinched under a fairing, or the ground plane was inadequate.
