Edge Protectors: The Simplest Insurance on a Flatbed

Nobody has ever called the dispatch desk excited about edge protectors. They are plastic angles that sit under straps and do nothing dramatic — right up until the trip where their absence does something extremely dramatic: a strap sawn through by steel banding, a bundle walking off the back corner of a deck at highway speed, and a claims adjuster asking the question that has no good answer: "What was between the webbing and the edge?"

How does a tensioned strap actually get cut?
Not the way drivers picture it. A strap almost never gets sliced in one event — it gets sawn. Put webbing under thousands of pounds of tension over a hard corner and three things happen at once: the tension concentrates the load on the few fibres touching the edge, road vibration moves the strap across that edge a few millimetres thousands of times an hour, and the edge — steel banding, sheared plate, split lumber, cured concrete — acts as the fixed blade. The strap does the cutting to itself. Miles are the feed rate.
This is why a strap that looked fine at the dock is half-severed at the fuel stop, and why edge damage always appears exactly at the corner contact point. The physics also explains the fix: you cannot remove the tension or the vibration, so you change the geometry. Spread the contact over a wide, smooth surface and the sawing has nothing to bite.
What does the regulation actually require?
The cargo securement rules — FMCSA 393.104 and the matching provisions of Canada's NSC Standard 10 — put it plainly: edge protection must be used whenever a tie-down would be subject to abrasion or cutting at the point where it touches the cargo, and the protector itself must resist the abrasion and cutting. Two things follow from that wording. First, edge protection is not a best practice; on sharp freight it is a condition of the tie-down being valid at all. Second, the protector has to be up to the job — a strip of cardboard on sheared steel plate satisfies nobody, least of all the officer looking at it.
The inspection consequence is mechanical: a strap being cut by the load is a defective tie-down, and a defective tie-down comes out of your aggregate working load limit and your minimum count. On a load strapped to the minimum, one unprotected corner is the difference between rolling and sitting, as laid out in avoiding out-of-service violations.
Which freight makes protectors mandatory logic?
Run down the flatbed commodity list and the pattern is obvious. Banded steel and banded lumber: the banding itself is a cutting edge aimed at every strap that crosses it. Plate, sheared blanks, and structural steel: edges from the shear are close to tooling. Concrete products — barriers, pipe, precast panels: cured concrete is an abrasive that eats webbing on vibration alone. Granite and stone: same, with more weight. Rebar and mesh bundles: hundreds of cut ends. Even friendly freight earns protection at its corners, because a 90-degree corner concentrates strap tension enough to damage both the webbing and the freight under it — strap dents in aluminum trim, crushed carton corners, bruised top boards on appearance-grade lumber.
That last point is the half of the argument drivers forget: the V-board protects in both directions. The strap is saved from the freight, and the freight's finished surface is saved from a 4-inch strap under full winch tension. Receivers reject on appearance; adjusters price it either way.
What does the missing protector look like in a claim file?
Work the failure backwards the way an adjuster does. A strap parts on the highway; the load shifts or leaves the trailer. The carrier files the incident report, and the claim review asks for photos of the securement, the driver's inspection records, and the condition of the failed tie-down. A strap that failed at a clean cut on a corner contact point, with no protector in the photos, hands the adjuster the narrative: preventable failure, known hazard, industry-standard mitigation not used. That framing follows the carrier into the liability discussion, the cargo policy renewal, and — if the shifted load produced a roadside event — the CVOR or CSA record. Now price the other branch: a stack of plastic angles in the headache rack. There is no version of this comparison where the plastic loses.
How do you actually run them day to day?
The friction with edge protectors is never the concept, it is the choreography, so solve the choreography. Carry enough: count the strap-to-edge contacts on your usual freight and carry that many plus spares, because protectors crack, blow away, and get forklifted. Stage before you strap: protectors go on the corners first, then straps over them, and in any wind you either weight them or run the first strap loosely to pin them — chasing a V-board across a shipper's yard is a rite of passage that happens once. Check them at every securement stop: vibration walks protectors along the edge, and a protector that has migrated off the contact point is decoration. And store them where they live long — a rack or box, not loose on the deck plates being ground by chain.
Do protectors help the tarp too?
More than most drivers realize. The same corners that saw straps chafe through tarp fabric, and they do it at the tarp's tightest contact points, where the wind works the fabric against the edge all day. A load dressed with corner protection under the lumber tarp keeps the vinyl off the banding and the sheared ends, which is the difference between a tarp that lasts seasons and one that comes home with a constellation of wear holes over every corner of every load it covered. Weather protection and securement fail at the same points for the same reason — concentrated contact on something sharp — and one piece of plastic addresses both.

Put plastic on every edge that can bite, stage it before the straps, re-check it when you re-check tension — and the strap budget, the inspection, and the claim file all get quieter at once.
