You booked a shipment at freight class 70, and the invoice came back reclassified to class 125 — adding $180 you never budgeted for. Density is calculated as: total weight in pounds, divided by total cubic feet (length × width × height in inches, divided by 1,728, multiplied by number of pieces). A pallet of machine parts weighing 800 lbs in a 48×40×48-inch footprint has roughly 53 cubic feet, giving a density of about 15 lbs per cubic foot — likely landing in a mid-range class. The same dimensions holding 200 lbs of lightweight foam product has a density under 4 lbs per cubic foot, and will land in a much higher, more expensive class.
