Frozen and fresh reefer loads run different setpoints, cycles, and risks. Here is what carriers need to know before accepting either kind of load.

A dispatcher offers you a load and says "it's reefer, 34 degrees" and then a different one says "reefer, frozen" — and if you treat those two loads the same way, you are setting yourself up for a claim. Frozen and fresh freight are not variations of the same job. They run different setpoints, different unit run modes, different pre-trip standards, and carry different risk profiles if something goes wrong. What are the actual temperature ranges for each?

  • Fresh produce: Typically 34–40°F (1–4°C), though specific commodities vary — bananas often ship warmer (56–58°F) and some greens ship colder
  • Dairy and fresh meat: Usually 33–38°F (0.5–3.3°C), with tighter tolerance than general produce

Which run mode fits which load type?

  • Frozen freight: Cycle-sentry mode is often appropriate and saves meaningful fuel, since frozen product has more thermal mass and buffer, and does not need the same constant airflow that fresh produce does

  • Fresh produce: Damage is fast and visible — wilting, browning, and decay can show within hours of a temperature excursion, and receivers reject on sight with little room for argument
  • Frozen freight: Damage is slower to show but can be more severe once it does — partial thawing and refreezing (a "freeze-thaw cycle") can happen without obvious surface signs, and food safety concerns from a partial thaw are a serious liability even if the product looks fine
  • A frozen load that partially thaws and is refrozen is often considered compromised for food safety reasons regardless of appearance — this makes documentation of continuous frozen temperature even more important than for fresh freight, where visible condition often speaks for itself
  • Frozen freight claims can be harder to dispute after the fact precisely because the damage is not visually obvious — your continuous trip-record data becomes the primary evidence either way

Mixed-temperature loads are one of the most common sources of claims in reefer freight because a single trailer running one setpoint cannot properly serve two different temperature requirements at once.

  • A trailer set to a frozen setpoint will overcool fresh produce sharing the space, causing chill damage or freezing to product never meant to go below freezing
  • A trailer set to a fresh setpoint will not adequately protect frozen product, risking a slow thaw over the length of the trip even if the display never shows an obvious excursion
  • Some trailers are built with multi-temp zone capability (a bulkhead partition with independent temperature control on each side) — this is the only reliable way to legitimately combine frozen and fresh freight in one move, and it requires specialized equipment most standard reefer trailers do not have
  • If a broker offers you a mixed load without multi-temp equipment, treat it as a red flag and ask directly how they expect both temperature requirements to be met — if the answer is vague, decline the load rather than accept the liability

How do I decide which type of reefer freight fits my operation?

Neither category is inherently better — the right fit depends on your equipment's condition, your comfort with tight-tolerance freight, and how your reefer unit performs in cycle-sentry versus continuous run. A driver with an older unit that struggles to hold a hard frozen setpoint in summer heat should think carefully before accepting frozen freight in July, regardless of the rate. A driver whose unit runs strong and consistent, with good door seals and a clean coil, can move confidently between both categories. Know your equipment's real capability, not just its rated capability, before saying yes to a load type that pushes it to its limit. Many experienced reefer carriers deliberately specialize — some build a reputation and a customer base entirely around frozen protein and seafood lanes, others focus on fresh produce during peak season and shift toward more forgiving freight the rest of the year. There is no wrong answer here as long as the decision is deliberate, based on what your specific truck and trailer can reliably deliver, rather than accepting whatever load happens to post highest on the board that day.
