Every dash cam argument eventually collapses into one question, and it is not about resolution. It is about how many directions you want recorded and how much complexity you are willing to install to get them. Garmin sells a small, polished, front-facing unit that does one job and does not ask much of you. Vantrue sells a multi-channel body that covers the cab interior as well and expects you to run a hardwire kit and feed it storage. Both record 4K. Both survive a windshield. The split is philosophical, and the right answer depends entirely on what kind of claim you are most afraid of.
What are you actually choosing between?
On one side, the Garmin Dash Cam X310: front-only, 4K, with a polarizing filter built into the lens and a body small enough to disappear behind the mirror. It saves incident clips automatically, stamps them with GPS coordinates, speed, and time, and takes voice commands so you can flag a clip without reaching for it. Garmin retired the old 67W and this is the current unit in that slot.
On the other, the Vantrue N4 Pro S: 4K front plus an infrared cabin lens that records a pitch-dark sleeper, with a supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery and no monthly fee attached to any of it. It is a bigger object on the glass and a more involved install, and in exchange it sees things the Garmin structurally cannot.
Note what is not on the table: resolution. Both put 4K on the front channel. Anyone selling you a dash cam decision on megapixels is selling the wrong variable. What separates footage that settles a claim from footage that does not is glare control, night behaviour, and whether the camera was pointed at the thing in dispute.
Does the second channel earn its place in a tractor?
This is the whole decision, so be honest about your exposure. A front-facing camera answers the question "who caused the collision." That is the majority of dash cam value and the Garmin covers it completely. A cabin-facing camera answers a different set of questions: what a passenger did, what a driver did in the ten seconds before impact, whether the person who opened the door at a truck stop was who they claimed to be, and whether the injury claim filed three weeks later has any relationship to what happened in the vehicle.
Staged-accident claims are the sharpest version of that exposure. The pattern is well documented and it targets commercial vehicles specifically, because commercial policies carry limits worth chasing. A front camera shows the impact. A cabin camera shows that nobody in your truck was thrown around the way the claim describes. One caveat the spec sheet will not give you: the N4 Pro S is a three-channel design, and the third rear channel is close to useless on a tractor-trailer. It points at the front of your own trailer. Buy this unit for the cabin lens and treat the rear channel as a feature that belongs on a pickup.
Which one holds up to cab heat and cold?
This is the failure mode nobody thinks about until their camera stops recording in August. A dash cam mounted to a windshield lives in the hottest place in the vehicle — behind glass, in direct sun, in a cab that reaches oven temperatures in a Prairie summer and then swings to forty below in a Manitoba January. Lithium batteries handle that badly. They swell, they lose capacity, and eventually they refuse to boot.
The Vantrue uses a supercapacitor rather than a lithium cell, which is the correct engineering answer for this environment and a genuine durability advantage. Supercapacitors tolerate temperature extremes that kill batteries, and they exist purely to keep the unit alive long enough to close the last file cleanly after power drops. Any dash cam you buy for a Canadian truck should be a supercapacitor unit, and this is a legitimate mark in Vantrue's column.
What do adjusters actually ask for?
From the desk, the pattern is consistent: adjusters do not ask for beautiful video. They ask for time, location, and speed, and they ask for it in a form that has not been edited. Garmin's incident clips arrive stamped with GPS and speed already embedded, which removes an argument before it starts. That metadata discipline is the strongest practical argument for the Garmin ecosystem and it is worth more than a marginal difference in image quality.
The second thing adjusters ask is whether the footage still exists. This is where drivers lose cases they should win. Loop recording overwrites, and if the incident clip did not lock, the evidence is gone in a few hours of driving. Garmin's voice command exists exactly for this — you say the word and the clip locks without taking a hand off the wheel. Third: glare. A polarized lens is not a marketing feature on a truck. You sit high, your windshield rakes back at an aggressive angle, and the dash reflects into the glass all day. The Garmin builds polarization into the lens. It is the single most underrated spec in the category, and it is why a lower-spec polarized camera routinely produces more usable plates than a higher-spec unpolarized one.
What about storage and subscriptions?
The Vantrue writes two 4K-class streams and consumes storage accordingly. Plan on a large high-endurance card — a standard consumer card is built for a camera that writes occasionally, not for a device that rewrites the same cells continuously for years, and it will fail silently. A card that has quietly died is functionally the same as having no camera, and you will not find out until you need the file.
The Garmin's local recording carries no fee, but its Cloud Vault remote-access feature does require a paid subscription. If you want footage retrievable from your phone while the truck sits at a yard, that is a recurring commitment. The Vantrue has no equivalent offering and no equivalent fee — you pull the card. Neither approach is wrong; they are different assumptions about whether you will be near the truck.

Which camera should go on the glass?
The Garmin is the pick if you run solo, no passengers, and your exposure is ordinary highway collision risk. It is the option that asks the least of you: small, quick to mount, polarized against the glare that ruins truck footage, and disciplined about the metadata an adjuster will ask for. If a camera is going to earn its keep by being installed and forgotten, this is that camera.
The Vantrue is the pick if you team-drive, carry passengers, run high-value freight, or operate in corridors where staged claims are a known pattern. The infrared cabin lens is the reason to buy it and it is a genuine capability the Garmin does not have at any spec level. Accept the trade: a larger unit on the glass, a hardwire kit for parking mode, and a serious high-endurance card.
What is the dispatch-desk verdict?
The honest split is this. Garmin sells reliability and an evidence workflow; Vantrue sells coverage. If you can only answer one question with footage, "who hit whom" is the right question, and the Garmin answers it with less friction and better glare control. If your risk profile includes anything happening inside the cab, no amount of front-camera polish substitutes for a lens pointed at the interior.
What matters more than either choice: install it properly, feed it a card built for continuous rewriting, and confirm every few weeks that it is actually recording. The most expensive dash cam failure has never been a resolution problem. It is a driver reaching for footage after an incident and finding a camera that stopped writing files in March.
