Steel service centers and mills that ship coil regularly are also selective about who they load. Why Coils Are the Highest-Risk Flatbed Freight

Coil racks themselves vary — some are fixed-position cradles built into the trailer frame, others use removable coil bunks that let the same trailer haul flat freight when coil work is scarce. The removable option costs more upfront but adds flexibility that matters for carriers who don't want their equipment locked into a single commodity type, particularly useful given how seasonal and regional coil demand can be.
Securement Rules Specific to Coiled Steel
Coiled steel has its own section under the federal cargo securement regulations (49 CFR 393.120) separate from general cargo rules, because the round shape and density change what "secure" actually requires. The rule sets different tie-down and WLL requirements depending on loading orientation, and generally requires a higher aggregate working load limit relative to the coil's weight than a standard rectangular load of the same weight would need. In practice this means more chains, higher-rated chains, or both, compared to what the same tonnage of steel plate or beams would require. Eye-to-the-Sky vs. Eye-to-the-Front Loading
- Eye-to-the-sky: the coil sits with its core opening facing up, generally requiring chocks on both sides plus chain securement over the top since nothing inherently stops side-to-side roll
- Eye-to-the-front (or eye-to-the-rear): the coil sits on its side with the core facing forward or back, which allows the coil's own contact surface with the deck to help resist lateral movement, though it still requires full chain securement front and back
The shipper typically determines loading orientation based on the coil's size and how it will be unloaded at destination, but you as the driver are responsible for confirming the load is secured correctly for whichever orientation you end up with — not just trusting that however it arrived on the trailer is fine.
What Steel Coil Freight Pays
Coil freight commands a premium over general flatbed rates in most markets, reflecting both the specialized equipment required and the liability carriers take on. Dedicated coil lanes in strong industrial corridors (Great Lakes region, Ontario's steel corridor, the US Rust Belt) tend to price well above average flatbed rates, particularly for carriers running their own coil racks who can load and unload quickly. Rates on coil freight also tend to be less volatile than general flatbed spot rates, since the pool of qualified carriers is smaller and steel mills and service centers generally prefer stable, repeat relationships over chasing the lowest bid on the spot market.
