Winter Shutdown Sleep: 12V Heat Without Running the Engine

A highway closure with the engine off is a survival scenario. Heated blankets, bags, and draw budgets for -30 nights.

There is a version of a cold night that is a comfort problem, and a version that is a survival problem, and the line between them is whether the engine is running. Idling through minus 30 with the bunk heat on is uncomfortable and expensive. Sitting on a closed highway with a no-start, a dead charging system, or a fuel-gelling event is a different category entirely — and the drivers who handle it calmly are the ones who worked out their 12V heat budget in October instead of at 2 a.m. in a ditch line of stopped trucks.

Why is a shutdown night different from a cold night?

A running truck makes heat almost for free: coolant temperature holds, the bunk blower moves warm air, and the alternator backfills every amp you draw. Kill the engine and all three go away at once. A sleeper without heat sheds temperature fast — not house-fast, truck-fast, because a cab is a thin aluminium and glass box with a large surface-to-volume ratio and a windshield that behaves like a radiator pointed at the sky. Inside a couple of hours the cab is tracking outside air. Meanwhile every electrical load you run is now withdrawing from a fixed account with no deposits.

That is why the planning question is never "is this blanket warm?" It is "how many amp-hours does staying warm cost me, and how many do I have?" The scenario to plan against is the one in our highway-closure guide — road shut, no services, unknown reopening time, and a driver who now needs to make one battery bank last until either the plows win or a wrecker arrives.

What does a 12V heated blanket actually deliver?

A truck-stop-standard 12V fleece blanket plugs into a lighter socket and pulls in the neighbourhood of 55 watts — call it 4 to 5 amps at 12V. It is a contact heater, not a space heater: it warms the surface touching you and the small pocket of air trapped under the bedding, and it tops out around 40 °C at the fabric. That is genuinely enough to make a cold bunk sleepable, and it is dramatically more efficient than trying to heat the whole volume of the cab. It will not raise cab temperature in any meaningful way, and it will not keep a windshield clear.

Three operating habits matter more than the model. Pre-warm the bunk for fifteen or twenty minutes before you get in, while the engine is still running — climbing into a warm bed is worth more than any setting change afterward. Layer above it, not below: insulation on top traps what the blanket makes, while a heavy layer underneath just soaks it up. And do not wash it. The heating element and its wiring are not built to survive a machine cycle, and a failed element in a blanket you are lying on is a fault you want no part of. Spot-clean and let it dry fully before it goes back on power.

What is your battery budget for a night with the engine off?

Do this arithmetic once and write it on the inside of the side-box lid. A 55W blanket at 12V draws roughly 4.6 amps; over an eight-hour night that is somewhere near 35–40 amp-hours. A healthy Group 31 AGM offers around 100 Ah nominal, but you only get to spend about half of it before you are into territory that shortens battery life and risks a no-start. So one blanket, one night, on one dedicated house battery is tight but workable. Two nights is not, and adding a phone, a laptop, a CPAP, and a fan on top of it is not.

The bigger rule is separation. House loads should not draw from the bank that cranks the engine. If your truck has an isolator, a battery protector, or a dedicated auxiliary bank, know which sockets are on which side of it; if it does not, treat the whole exercise as borrowing against your start. A low-voltage cutoff set to disconnect around 12.0–12.2 V resting is a cheap piece of insurance that turns "I woke up cold" into a much better outcome than "I woke up cold and the truck will not turn over." And remember that cold cuts the usable capacity of any battery chemistry — the minus-30 night is the night your bank has the least to give.

Counterintuitive but true: over a full night the blanket usually pulls more amp-hours than the bunk heater does, because the heater's big current draw only happens at startup.

When does the blanket stop being enough?

A blanket manages one sleeping human under bedding. It does not manage a cab. Past roughly minus 20, and certainly on a multi-night closure, you want heat that raises cab temperature, keeps the glass clear, and does not run the battery down — which is exactly the argument for a diesel bunk heater. The number that surprises drivers is the electrical one: a 2kW heater pulls hard for the ninety seconds or so of glow-plug startup, then settles to a running draw far below what a heated blanket holds all night. It is fuel it spends, not amps, and it spends it in fractions of a litre per hour rather than the several litres an hour a big-bore burns at idle. What else belongs in the shutdown kit?

Heat is one leg of a three-leg stool: insulation, hydration, and calories carry the rest. A proper cold-rated sleeping bag rated below the temperature you actually expect — not the temperature you hope for — does more work than any powered device, because it costs nothing to run. Windshield and side-window insulation blocks the single largest heat leak in the cab. A wool base layer, a toque, and dry socks matter because most heat loss is from the head and extremities. Water stored where it will not freeze solid, and food that needs no cooking, keep your body producing its own heat. A 12V blanket is the efficient top-up on that foundation, not a replacement for it.

Two hard safety rules. Never run an unvented combustion device — propane heater, catalytic heater, camp stove — in a closed sleeper; carbon monoxide in a sealed cab kills quietly and without warning. And if you do idle intermittently to recharge and rewarm, clear snow away from the exhaust stack and the intake before every start, because drifting snow around a stopped truck can push exhaust back into the cab. What is the buying checklist?

  • Know your draw in amps, not watts. Then divide your usable bank capacity by it and you have your hours.
  • Cord length that actually reaches the bunk from a live socket — no extension cords, no splices.
  • House loads off the starting bank wherever the truck allows it, plus a low-voltage cutoff.
  • A cold-rated bag and window insulation first. Passive insulation never runs your battery down.
  • No unvented combustion in the sleeper, and a CO detector if any combustion heater is installed.
  • Pre-warm while the engine runs, then shut down — you are maintaining heat, not creating it from cold.

Work the amp-hour math before the season, not during the closure. The drivers who ride out a twelve-hour shutdown in reasonable shape are rarely the ones with the most gear — they are the ones who knew exactly what their bank could give them and never gambled the start.
