A highway closure is not an emergency. That is exactly what makes it dangerous. Nobody is hurt, the truck is fine, the load is fine — you are simply stopped, in a line of several hundred other trucks, on a grade, in weather, for a number of hours that nobody will commit to. Highway 5 through the Coquihalla is the case study Canadian carriers know best: avalanche control, a jackknife in the Snowshed, or a heavy snowfall event closes it, and the queue builds from Merritt and Hope simultaneously. But the pattern repeats on the Rogers Pass, on I-80 through Wyoming, on I-70 in Colorado, and on any two-lane where a single incident has no detour. It is what you have with you when you do.
How long is a closure actually going to last?
Longer than the first estimate. That is the single most useful planning assumption in this entire piece. Initial reopening estimates come out before the scene is fully assessed, before a heavy tow is dispatched, and before anyone knows whether the equipment can get through the queue that has already formed behind the incident. A closure announced as two hours routinely becomes six; an overnight avalanche-control closure with fresh snow on top becomes a full shift plus the time it takes to release a queue of several hundred trucks single-file. Why is idling the wrong long-term answer to cold?
Because it is the answer that runs out. A modern heavy-duty engine at fast idle burns in the range of three to four litres per hour — call it roughly 0.8 to 1.0 gallons — and fourteen hours of that is a serious hole in your tanks at exactly the moment you cannot reach a fuel island. That is before the wear side: idle hours accumulate on the same meter your service intervals are keyed to, and extended low-load idling in cold weather is hard on aftertreatment systems in ways that surface later as regeneration problems and shop time, which is why idle hours belong in the same conversation as the rest of your preventive maintenance schedule. And it is before the failure mode that matters most: an idling engine is a single point of failure. If it shuts down at 3 a.m. because of a fuel gelling event or a sensor fault, you lose heat and electrical power in the same instant, in the cold, in a queue where no service truck can reach you.
A bunk heater inverts that. It burns diesel from the same tank at a rate measured in fractions of a litre per hour rather than litres, it produces heat directly at the sleeper instead of heating an entire engine block to get there, and it runs independently of the main engine — so an engine problem does not become a heat problem. The relevant specifications for a sleeper are output rating (2kW is the standard size for a bunk; larger units short-cycle and overheat the space), thermostatic control so it modulates instead of running flat out, and the completeness of the kit, because the install is where these projects stall.
What does the electrical side of a 14-hour sit look like?
Heat is only half the problem. In a long closure the loads that actually matter are communication and food. Your phone is how dispatch reaches you, how you get reopening information, and how your family knows you are fine; in a queue where hundreds of drivers are all on the same congested tower, phones burn battery far faster than normal because the radio is transmitting at full power hunting for signal. Add a tablet, the ELD, a laptop, a heated blanket, and a way to make hot food, and the demand across fourteen hours is substantially more than the truck's accessory outlets and start batteries are designed to supply while stationary.
A portable power station is the answer that requires no install and no wiring decisions at 2 a.m. The specifications that matter for closure duty are continuous AC output (a bunk microwave in the 700W class wants a station rated well above it so the surge does not trip it), usable capacity in watt-hours, and chemistry — LiFePO4 packs tolerate cold and deep cycling far better than older lithium chemistries, and cycle life in the thousands means the unit is a multi-year asset rather than a consumable. Recharge speed matters too: the closure ends, you drive, and the station needs to be full again before the next one, which is a real consideration on a lane that closes repeatedly through a winter.
Bunk heater and power station, or just idle: how do they compare?
This is the comparison that decides how a long closure goes. Both approaches keep a driver warm and charged for a while. They fail very differently.
What else belongs in the truck before the road shuts?
Water first, and more of it than feels reasonable — several litres per person, stored where it will not freeze solid against an outside wall. Food that requires no preparation, because the moment you most need calories is the moment you least want to cook: nuts, jerky, instant oatmeal, soup that only needs hot water. Then the items that turn a bad night into a manageable one: a proper cold-rated sleeping bag rather than the summer bedding you have been using, a headlamp, spare gloves and boots that are actually dry, and hand warmers. A CO detector is not optional in a sleeper with any combustion appliance running, and it is the smallest piece of equipment on this list that can prevent a fatal outcome. Two closure-specific additions. First, a physical means of getting information that does not depend on a congested cell tower — in mountain queues the CB still carries the accurate reopening rumour long before an official update posts. Second, fuel treatment appropriate to the temperature, because a queue that sits overnight below minus twenty is exactly where untreated fuel gels, and a gelled truck does not move when the road opens. That last point is the one drivers underestimate: the closure ends and the queue releases in a single fast wave, and a truck that will not start becomes the new obstruction.
What should the driver actually do while sitting?
Shut down the engine and start the heater as soon as it is clear the stop is measured in hours rather than minutes — the earlier the switch, the more fuel and idle hours you save. Notify dispatch immediately with your exact location, your remaining hours, and your fuel state; all three drive decisions on the office side about the appointment, the reload, and whether a relay makes sense. Log the time correctly. Set the phone to low-power mode and charge it from the station rather than the dash. Then, and this is not a throwaway line, sleep if the clock allows it. A closure is dead time you did not choose; converting some of it into rest means you come off the pass fit to drive a mountain grade in winter conditions, which is the actual next task and one the winter driving fundamentals assume you are alert for.
The thing dispatch wants carriers to internalize is that closure gear is not comfort spending. It is the difference between a driver who emerges from fourteen hours rested, fuelled, and ready to run a pass, and one who emerges cold, hungry, on a dead phone, having idled away a quarter tank. Both trucks sat in the same line. Only one of them is genuinely fit to be first through when the gates open.
