The numbers printed on jump packs and the numbers a big-bore diesel demands are measured differently, and the gap between them is exactly where drivers get stranded with a dead pack clamped to a dead truck. What is the difference between peak amps and cranking amps?
The big number on the box is peak amps — what the pack's cells can dump into a near-short for a fraction of a second. Your engine does not care about that number. Cranking a diesel is a sustained job: hundreds of amps delivered continuously for several seconds while the starter fights 15-plus litres of cold, thick-oiled compression. The figure that maps to that job is cranking amps — current sustained across a standardized multi-second draw — and it is routinely a quarter to a third of the peak figure. A pack advertising 2,000 peak amps may sustain only a few hundred, which turns a big starter over once, slowly, and quits. When you compare packs, hunt the spec sheet for the sustained or cranking figure and the engine-displacement rating, and treat any listing that shows only a peak number as a car product wearing truck marketing.
What does cold soak do to the whole equation?
Cold moves both sides of the ledger against you. The engine's demand rises: oil thickens, compression resistance climbs, and the current needed to spin a cold-soaked big-bore can run half again higher than on a mild morning. Meanwhile the pack's supply falls: lithium cells deliver dramatically less current when frozen, and a pack that lived in the side box through a minus-30 night might manage half its rated output at the moment you need all of it. The practical habits that close the gap: store the pack in the cab, not the side box, so it stays closer to cabin temperature; warm a frozen pack before use — many packs will pre-warm themselves under load briefly, but ten minutes on the bunk heater vent is better; and top the charge monthly, because lithium self-discharge plus cold is how packs arrive at the emergency at 60%. Why do clamps and cables decide the outcome?
Delivering 500-plus sustained amps through thin cables and stamped clamps is physically impossible — resistance turns the current into heat instead of cranking. Serious diesel-rated packs ship with thick, short, flexible cable and heavy copper-jawed clamps for a reason: on a Group 31 post, contact area is everything, and a light clamp perched on a corroded terminal delivers a fraction of the pack's capability. Technique matters as much as hardware. Scrape or wire-brush the contact point if there is any corrosion; clamp firmly onto clean metal; connect to the battery the starter actually pulls from, not the most convenient post in a multi-battery bank (check your truck's layout before the emergency, not during it); and let the pack push charge into the dead bank for two or three minutes before cranking — that pre-charge often makes the difference between a groan and a start. Modern packs add spark-proof and reverse-polarity protection, which matters at 6 a.m. in the dark with gloves on.
Where is the honest ceiling of self-rescue?
Read the displacement rating without optimism. A 4,000A-class pack rated to 8.0L diesel covers an enormous amount of real trucking life — reefer unit batteries, APUs, straight trucks, yard trucks, the pickup at home — and, critically, the most common Class 8 scenario of all: a main bank that is low-but-not-dead after a long parked stretch, where the pack's job is to top up a bank that then cranks the engine itself. What it does not promise is a stone-dead 15L big-bore at minus 30; that can exceed any handheld pack, and 24V series-wired systems are off the table entirely. Know which scenario you are in before you burn the pack's charge: two or three failed attempts on a truly dead big-bore leaves you with a depleted pack and the same road-service call — now later in the appointment window. A road-service boost lands in the low hundreds of dollars, but the dwell is the real bill: two to four hours of waiting on a winter morning while a delivery window closes, a reload gets jeopardized, and a broker starts making calls.
