Google Maps Almost Fits a Truck: When a dezl or TND Actually Pays for Itself
Google Maps doesn't know your height, weight, or hazmat status. Here's when a real truck GPS pays for itself — and when your phone is genuinely enough.

Google Maps will route a 13'6" dry van under an 11'8" railway bridge without blinking, because as far as Google is concerned you are a Corolla. It does not know your height. It does not know you are grossing 79,000 lb across five axles. It does not know your trailer swings wide on a hairpin or that your placarded load is banned from the tunnel it just picked to save you four minutes. Most days that gap never shows itself, which is exactly why drivers keep running car nav under load — right up until the day it does. From the dispatch desk, we hear about that day. It usually starts with a phone call that opens with "so, the trailer roof."
The 11-foot-8 problem, scaled up
The internet treats bridge strikes as entertainment — the famous "can opener" bridge has its own fan channel of box trucks getting peeled like sardine tins. Nobody in that comment section is paying the bill. When it is your authority on the door, a strike is four separate financial events stacked on top of each other: the trailer repair or write-off, the cargo claim on whatever was in the nose, the invoice from the province or state for inspecting and repairing the structure, and the liability claim if debris or the stopped truck caused a secondary collision. The structure repair alone can run into six figures on an older bridge, and the jurisdiction will pursue it.
Then comes the paper trail. In Ontario, a bridge strike lands on your CVOR as a preventable collision, and if the road was signed as a no-truck route or a posted clearance, expect charges on top — we walked through how those events accumulate in our CVOR guide. In the US, it feeds your Crash Indicator BASIC and gives every insurance underwriter who looks at your file a reason to reprice you at renewal. And here is the part drivers underestimate: the claims adjuster will ask what navigation the vehicle was running. "The GPS told me to" has never once voided a posted clearance sign, and an adjuster who hears "Google Maps, on a phone, on a commercial vehicle" is hearing a negligence argument assemble itself. Posted signs are binding. The nav that put you there is just the explanation for how you ignored one.
What truck routing actually inputs
A dedicated truck GPS is not a nicer screen — it is a different routing engine fed a profile of your actual vehicle. Before it draws a single route, it wants:
- Height. The obvious one. The unit compares your entered height against a clearance database and routes around anything that does not fit, with a margin. Car nav has no concept of clearance at all.
- Weight — gross and per axle. Weight-restricted bridges, seasonal spring-thaw road bans on the prairies and in northern Ontario, and municipal truck bylaws all key off weight. - Length and trailer configuration. A 53-footer is banned from roads a straight truck runs legally. Length also drives turn restrictions — the routing engine will keep you off streets where your tail swing has no business being.
- Hazmat class. Placarded loads are restricted from specific tunnels, bridges, and urban cores. Truck routing engines carry those restriction layers by hazmat class; Google Maps carries none of them. Running placarded freight on car nav is how you end up explaining a tunnel violation to an officer who has zero sense of humour about it.
Every one of those inputs maps to a violation category that can put a truck out of service or a driver on the side of the road for hours. The routing engine is, in a real sense, compliance software — the same logic we push in our guide to avoiding out-of-service violations: the cheapest violation is the one the plan never let happen.
Break planning, parking, and the dead zones
Routing around bridges is the headline feature, but it is not what makes drivers keep the unit after the first month. Three quieter features do.
HOS-aware trip planning. Current dezl units let you set break and drive-time alerts against your clock, then surface truck stops with parking before the clock runs out — not after. That matters because the parking decision has to be made at the 8-hour mark, not the 10.5-hour mark. A driver hunting for parking on fumes of drive time takes whatever ramp shoulder appears, and ramp shoulders are where trucks get hit.
Community parking and dock data. Both Garmin and Rand McNally now pull driver-sourced ratings on truck stops, parking lots, and even receiver docks. Knowing at 15:00 that the plaza you were counting on fills by 18:30 changes the whole back half of the day. Garmin's aerial-view feature — a satellite photo of the customer's yard before you commit to the gate — has saved more blind-side backing disasters than any of us can count.
Offline maps. This is the one Canadian carriers should weight heaviest. Phone nav is a streaming service; it needs signal to recalculate. Highway 11 and 17 across northern Ontario, the Coquihalla corridors, and long stretches of Saskatchewan and Manitoba grid country have dead zones measured in tens of kilometres. When a closure forces a detour in one of those zones, a phone with no signal is a paperweight showing your last known position. A dedicated unit carries the full North American map onboard and reroutes without asking a cell tower for permission.
The phone-app middle ground, honestly
Between raw Google Maps and dedicated hardware sits a tier of truck-routing phone apps, and the honest answer is that they are better than their reputation — with real limits.
Trucker Path has the best crowd-sourced layer in the industry: parking availability reported by drivers in near real time, fuel prices, weigh station status. Its truck navigation tier is a paid subscription and has matured a lot, but the app's core strength is still the crowd data, not the routing engine. Many drivers run it alongside a dedicated unit purely for parking intel.
Hammer, built out of the TruckersReport community, is the strongest free option: true dimension-based routing (height, weight, length, axles), multi-stop trips, and downloadable offline maps — genuinely rare at no cost. If your budget is zero, Hammer over Google Maps is not a close call.
SmartTruckRoute is the veteran — one of the longest-running truck GPS apps, with frequently updated truck maps and dependable low-bridge avoidance on a modest subscription. The interface looks a decade old because it more or less is, but the routing underneath is legitimate.
The shared weakness is the hardware they run on. Your phone is also your ELD interface, your broker line, your camera at the dock. Every call interrupts the nav. A July dashboard cooks a phone into thermal throttling right when you need the screen. Phone GPS antennas are built for walking directions, not for holding lock in a canyon or under an overpass stack. And the app is one OS update away from a bad week. The apps are a real middle ground — but they are a middle ground on borrowed hardware.
When Google Maps is genuinely enough
The dispatch desk is not going to pretend every truck needs a mounted unit. There are lanes where Google Maps is a defensible choice:
- Known local lanes. If you have run the same plant-to-warehouse loop for three years, you are the routing engine. Google is just a traffic overlay on a route you could drive blind, and its live traffic is better than anything Garmin or Rand McNally serves.
- Final-mile with a spotter or gate instructions. When the receiver sends turn-by-turn approach notes — and the good ones do — those notes outrank every nav platform on earth. Google gets you to the neighbourhood; the human who backs trucks in every day gets you to the door.
- Bobtailing. No trailer, no 13'6" problem, and most clearance and weight restrictions stop applying. Car nav on a bobtail is a much smaller gamble.
The failure mode is the transition: the known lane stops being known the moment a closure throws you onto a detour you have never run. That is precisely the moment car nav is most confident and most dangerous, because it will happily route the detour through an underpass. If Google is your primary, your fallback plan for a detour cannot also be Google.
The two units worth mounting
If the math above points you at dedicated hardware, the market in 2026 really comes down to two names. The Garmin dezl OTR820 is the current 8-inch unit in Garmin's refreshed OTR line: profile-based routing, driver-rated parking, wind and sharp-curve warnings, and the aerial dock views mentioned above. It is the unit we hear the least complaints about from OTR drivers running unfamiliar lanes week over week.
The Rand McNally TND 750 is the counterpick: a 7-inch unit whose pitch is the depth of Rand's commercial map data — the company has been publishing truck atlases since before GPS existed, and its low-bridge and restricted-road coverage reflects that. It also logs mileage by jurisdiction, which your IFTA file will appreciate. The interface is more utilitarian than the Garmin and it leans on Wi-Fi for updates, but the routing engine is the point, and the routing engine is excellent.
The dispatch-desk verdict
Here is how we would call it, lane by lane. Full-time OTR on rotating, unfamiliar lanes: dedicated unit, no debate — the offline maps and clearance data are doing real work weekly. Regional carrier on mostly known lanes: Hammer or Trucker Path as the truck-routing layer, Google for traffic, and honest discipline about which one is driving when a detour appears. Placarded loads: dedicated unit, full stop, because hazmat restriction layers are not something to crowd-source. And under a loaded trailer of any kind, raw Google Maps as the only navigation is the one configuration we will argue with you about.
The economics are lopsided in a way gear decisions rarely are. A single bridge strike puts a trailer repair, a cargo claim, a government invoice for the structure, a CVOR or CSA hit, and a renewal-time premium spike in play simultaneously — a sequence that has ended small carriers, as we covered in our accident procedure guide. Against that, a piece of windshield hardware that removes the single most preventable cause of the whole cascade is not really a purchasing decision. It is a deductible you only pay once, in advance, to never meet the adjuster at all.
