A winter closure is not a delay, it is a sealed container. When the Coquihalla shuts for an avalanche control window, when Highway 11 north of North Bay closes behind a multi-vehicle pileup, when the Trans-Canada across Saskatchewan goes to no-travel-advised in a ground blizzard, nobody is coming to you and you are not going anywhere. Whatever is in the truck at that moment is the entire inventory available to you for the next six to twenty-four hours. That is the design brief for a winter kit, and it is a very different brief from the year-round emergency box.
How long does a Canadian closure actually last?
Long enough that the answer changes what you pack. A routine avalanche closure in the BC interior runs a couple of hours. A pileup on a two-lane in northern Ontario ties up the highway for five or six while it gets cleared and investigated, because there is no detour worth the name. A ground blizzard on the prairies can hold a corridor overnight, and a plugged mountain pass in a heavy cycle can go longer than that. The distribution has a long tail, and the driver who packed for the median gets caught by the tail. Plan for twelve hours with the engine off and treat anything shorter as a bonus. How do you build the kit in layers instead of a pile?
A pile of gear in the side box is how drivers end up carrying eighty pounds of the wrong things. Layers work better because each one answers a different question, and you can audit them independently.
Layer one is on your body and in the cab within reach. Insulated boots, a real toque and mitts, and a dry base layer sealed in a bag — the thing that actually causes cold injuries in stranded drivers is wet clothing rather than absent clothing, so the sealed spare set matters more than the count of jackets. A headlamp or handheld light. Water that will not freeze solid, kept inside rather than in the box, and enough high-calorie food to cover a full day of meals you were planning to buy. Layer two keeps you warm with the engine off. An insulated sleeping bag rated below the temperatures you actually run in, a foil emergency blanket, chemical hand and body warmers, and a 12-volt heat source that does not require the engine. Layer three is self-rescue for the truck: a jump pack, a tire inflator, chains or cables where the corridor requires them, a folding shovel, traction aid or a bag of sand, and the fluids that go bad in cold — anti-gel additive, washer fluid rated to the temperature, spare fuel filter if you carry the wrench for it. Layer four is documentation and comms: a charged phone with a power bank, a paper atlas for the day the signal is gone, and the numbers for your dispatch, road service, and the provincial road-condition line.
What does the weight actually cost you?
A complete winter kit built this way runs forty to sixty pounds. On a van or reefer load that grosses out on cube long before weight, that is invisible. On a heavy commodity where you are scaling at 79,800 lb, it is real, and it is still the wrong thing to cut. The way to think about it is hours survived per pound: the sleeping bag and the sealed dry layer are the highest-value pounds in the truck, the food and water are next, and the ballast candidates are the duplicate tools and the third pair of everything. Weigh the kit once on a platform scale, know the number, and stop guessing about it. Drivers who cannot account for their permanent cab weight are the same drivers who get surprised at the shipper's scale — the same discipline that makes fuel economy work applies here.
How do you stay warm without idling all night?
Idling is the default answer and it is a poor one. A modern engine at idle burns in the range of three to four litres an hour, so a twelve-hour closure spent idling is fifty litres of fuel gone — on your account if you are an owner-operator, and against your fuel surcharge either way. Extended idling loads the aftertreatment system, drives regeneration cycles you did not want in a closure, and in many Canadian municipalities and US states runs into anti-idling bylaws with real fines attached. And it assumes a truck that runs. If the closure started with a no-start, idling is not on the menu at all.
The alternative is layered: insulation first, then a low-draw electric heat source off the battery bank. A 12-volt heated blanket pulling something like 55 watts draws under five amps — ten hours of that is well under fifty amp-hours, which a healthy Group 31 bank absorbs without drama, and which is nothing next to fifty litres of diesel. What it will not do is heat the cab. These units top out around body temperature and their job is to hold heat against you inside a sleeping bag or under a comforter, not to replace a bunk heater or an APU. Used the way they are designed — skin-adjacent, inside insulation — that ceiling is enough. Used as a cab heater, they are a disappointment every time.
What does cold do to the truck while you sit?
Three systems go after you. Fuel first: untreated summer-blend diesel starts to cloud and gel as temperatures fall through the minus teens, and the wax plugs the filter rather than the tank, which is why trucks die shortly after starting rather than while parked. Buy winter blend where you fuel in winter, treat when you are heading into a cold corridor with a tank bought in a warm one, and keep the tanks above half to limit condensation.
Air second: moisture that gets past a tired air dryer freezes in the lines and the valves, and a truck that will not build air or will not release brakes on a cold morning is usually telling you the dryer desiccant is due. That is a maintenance item, not a roadside one — it belongs on the schedule in our preventive maintenance guide before November, not in a parking lot in January. DEF is the third and the least worrying: 32 percent urea freezes around minus 11 Celsius by design, the tank heater thaws it on start-up, and nothing should ever be added to it.
Why does the battery bank decide how the closure ends?
Cold squeezes the electrical system from both ends at once. Battery capacity falls sharply below freezing — a bank that tests fine in the yard in October delivers a fraction of its rated cranking current at minus 30 — while the engine's demand rises, because cold oil and cold compression need more current to turn over. Add twelve hours of hazard flashers, a heated blanket, a phone charger, and an inverter somebody forgot to switch off, and the no-start is not bad luck. It is arithmetic.
A lithium jump pack is the honest self-rescue tool here, with honest limits. It is a 12-volt device, so a 24-volt series-wired system is outside its scope entirely. A pack rated to 8.0 litres of diesel covers reefer unit batteries, APUs, straight trucks, the pickup at home, and — most usefully — the common Class 8 case of a bank that is low rather than dead, where the pack tops the bank up and the truck cranks itself. A stone-dead 15-litre big bore at minus 30 can exceed any handheld pack, and two or three failed attempts just leave you with a flat pack and the same road service call. Store it in the cab where it stays near cabin temperature rather than in the side box, and top the charge monthly — a lithium pack that has sat in the cold since October arrives at the emergency at half charge.
What is the November checklist?
- Swap the layers in, take the summer kit out. Sleeping bag, sealed dry clothing, warmers, foil blanket, shovel, traction aid.
- Load-test the batteries and clean the terminals before the first cold snap, not after the first no-start.
- Confirm the chain law for every corridor you run and that the chains you carry actually fit the tires on the truck today.
- Top the jump pack, then set a monthly reminder — the same reminder can cover the blanket cord and plug for chafe.
- Water and food that survive freezing, stored inside the cab, in quantities that cover a full day.
- Weigh the finished kit once and write the number in the same place you keep your tare weight.

Pack the truck in October for the worst night the corridor has had in ten years, and the ordinary bad nights stop being events at all. The kit is not there to make a closure comfortable. It is there so that when the highway reopens at four in the morning, you are rested, warm, and the truck starts.
