Watch a driver chain up in a Rogers Pass pull-out at minus twenty-five and you will see the same thing every time. He starts with gloves on. Two minutes later, threading a cam hook through a link he cannot feel, the gloves come off and go on the fuel tank. Six minutes after that his hands stop working properly — not painfully, just clumsily, which is worse — and the job that should have taken twenty minutes takes forty. That is the entire problem in one sentence: a glove that comes off is a glove that does not exist.
Which reframes the buying question. It is not "which glove is warmest." It is "which glove stays on your hands through the whole job," because warmth you take off provides nothing, and every minute of bare-hand work at chain-up temperatures runs down a reserve you need for the drive after.
Why does dexterity beat insulation for chain work?
Because of how hands actually lose function in cold. Nerve conduction slows measurably as skin temperature drops, and fine motor control degrades before you feel real pain. By the time your fingers hurt, your grip strength and finger precision have already fallen off — which is why drivers describe fumbling a cam lock they have closed ten thousand times.
A thick mitt keeps hands warm right up until you take it off, and then the exposed hand cools fast because it is wet from sweat inside the mitt and the ambient air is doing convective work on it. A thinner glove that lets you complete the task without removal keeps hands at a lower but stable temperature for the entire twenty minutes, and stable moderate beats alternating warm-and-freezing every time.
The specific tasks that set the dexterity bar for a highway driver: threading a chain end behind a dual and finding it by feel on the other side, closing a cam or ratchet binder, hooking a bungee over a chain cross-member, pulling the fifth-wheel release handle, and running a glad-hand connection. Not one of those is heavy work. All of them are fine-motor work done blind, in the cold, often on your knees in slush.
What specs actually predict a glove surviving the season?
Four lines on the tag, in order of how often they are the reason a glove dies.
Cut rating. ANSI/ISEA 105 grades cut resistance A1 through A9. Chain hardware, worn winch cable, and the wire edge of a frayed strap all cut. A2 is the practical floor for chain and strap work — it is not body armour, but it is the difference between a surface scrape and a cut that ends a run and starts a WSIB file.
Waterproofing type. There is a real difference between a membrane and a treatment. A durable water repellent coating sheds light drizzle for a while and then wets out. A membrane between the shell and the liner keeps water out for the life of the glove. Anything working in slush, wet snow, or a wet chain-up needs the membrane; a DWR glove in wet snow is a wet glove in twelve minutes and a frozen glove the moment you set it down.
Insulation weight. Insulation in gloves is measured the same way it is in boots — grams per square metre. 40g is a working glove for active work above minus ten. 60g to 100g covers most Canadian chain-up and drop-and-hook work. Anything above that starts trading away the dexterity you bought the glove for.
Cuff design. Undersold and it matters constantly. A short knit cuff lets snow pack in the moment you reach up into a chain rack. A gauntlet cuff that closes over a jacket sleeve keeps snow and meltwater out. Reaching overhead is most of chaining and all of tarping, so the cuff is a functional spec, not styling.

Why does every experienced driver carry more than one pair?
Because the failure mode is not wear, it is wetness, and wetness happens on a timescale of minutes while drying happens on a timescale of hours. A glove that gets soaked inside — from meltwater over the cuff, from a hand pushed into wet snow, from sweat during hard work — is finished for the day. There is no field fix. A wet glove at minus twenty is worse than a bare hand because it holds water against skin.
The rotation that works: two pairs of the working glove, one pair of mitts, and a pair of thin liner gloves. Wear pair one, and when it soaks, it goes on the dash with the defroster on while pair two comes out. The liners live in a jacket pocket for the thirty-second tasks — grabbing a bill from a guard shack window, working a phone, pulling a fuel card — where taking the big glove off is unavoidable but bare skin on frozen metal is not.

Are heated gloves and hand warmers worth carrying?
Battery-heated gloves solve a real problem badly for this application. The heating elements run along the back of the hand and the fingers, which forces bulk exactly where dexterity lives, and the battery packs sit at the wrist where a gauntlet cuff needs to close. Run time is the other issue: manufacturers rate them at high output for a short window and lower output for longer, and cold weather cuts lithium capacity, so the rating on the box is an optimistic number in the conditions you bought them for. Where they genuinely earn a spot is stationary work — a long wait at an outdoor scale, a lot check in the Prairies, a driver with circulation problems who has run out of other answers.
Disposable air-activated warmers are the more useful item for chain work, and the placement matters more than the count. A warmer in the palm of the glove gets crushed and blocks grip. A warmer tucked at the back of the wrist over the radial artery warms the blood going into the hand, which is the mechanism that actually keeps fingers working. Same principle applies to boots — a toe warmer on top of the toes, not under them, where it does not compress the foot and kill the circulation you are trying to help.
Keep a few in the door pocket. They activate on air, they take five minutes to come up to temperature, so they get opened when you decide to chain rather than after your fingers have already quit.
How do gloves fit into the rest of the chain-up system?
Gloves are one component of a sequence, and the sequence is what keeps the job to twenty minutes. Park somewhere flat with room to walk both sides. Set out your triangles before you touch a chain if you are on a shoulder rather than in a designated pull-out. Get your hi-viz on. Pull the chains out and lay them before kneeling, so you are not crawling back and forth. Work with the glove on, and accept slower motions rather than faster bare-handed ones.
The footwear side is a genuine part of this. Kneeling in slush with a boot that leaks means the chain-up ends with wet feet as well as wet gloves, and a driver with both is a driver who is done for the day whether he admits it or not.
