First Flatbed Load: The Securement Kit Before You Say Yes

The worst place to discover what your flatbed kit is missing is a steel yard at six in the morning with a loader operator waiting and a dispatcher who already confirmed the load. Vans forgive an incomplete inventory. Flatbeds do not: the freight is exposed, the securement is the driver's responsibility from the moment the forks pull back, and there is no borrowing a chain from a shipper who has none to lend.

This is the inventory question answered from the dispatch side, which is a different question than the shopping-list version. What matters is not what a full-time flatbedder eventually owns — it is which loads you can accept today without improvising, and which ones you should decline until the box on the headache rack has the right things in it.

What does the math actually demand before anything else?

Aggregate working load limit is the gate. All tie-downs together must provide at least half the weight of the article being secured, and the rated capacity that counts is the tag on the assembly, not the width of the webbing or the look of the chain. A 44,000 lb load therefore needs 22,000 lb of aggregate WLL. Four 4-inch strap assemblies tagged at 5,400 lb each add to 21,600 lb, which is short — a fact that surprises new flatbed operators at exactly the wrong moment. Five straps clear it. So do three lengths of 3/8 Grade 70 chain at 6,600 lb each, with room to spare.

On top of the weight math sits the count rule: an article longer than 1.5 m and heavier than 500 kg takes a minimum of two tie-downs, plus one more for every additional 3 m of length or fraction of it. What is the minimum kit to say yes to general freight?

Start with tie-downs in both media. Eight to twelve 4-inch strap assemblies covers most palletized, crated, and packaged freight with enough spares that a cut strap does not become a cancelled load. Four to six lengths of 3/8 Grade 70 chain with matching binders covers machinery, steel, and anything that would saw through webbing. That pairing — not one or the other — is what lets a dispatcher offer you a lane instead of checking whether you are chain-capable every time.

Then the things that make tie-downs legal rather than merely present. Edge protection in quantity, because a single load can consume a dozen corners. Blocking and dunnage: 4x4s, wedges, and a few short boards for the loads that need to be prevented from rolling rather than pulled down. A winch bar and a spare, since it is the one tool that goes missing. Gloves that survive chain, and a ladder that lets you reach the top of a load without standing on freight.

Chain deserves one specific note because new operators buy the wrong grade. Grade 70 transport chain is the standard for tie-down use, gold chromate finished and embossed with a grade marking that an inspector looks for immediately. Grade 30 or proof coil from a hardware aisle is not a tie-down, does not carry the marking, and gets a load taken out of service on sight. What changes when the freight needs a tarp?

Tarps are the line between hauling flatbed freight and hauling the good flatbed freight. Building products, lumber, drywall, packaged machinery, and a large share of the better-paying industrial lanes require the load to arrive dry, and a carrier without tarps is invisible to those shippers. It is also the point where the kit gets heavy, awkward, and physically demanding, which is exactly why the loads pay what they pay.

Two tarps cover most work. A steel tarp — short drop, wide coverage — handles flat, low freight like plate and bundled steel. A lumber tarp with a deep drop and an end flap handles tall loads, sealing the sides and the exposed end so wind-driven rain cannot get under. Vinyl weight is the durability variable: heavier vinyl shrugs off abrasion, UV, and repeated folding for years, and it is genuinely hard to handle alone. Lighter tarps are easier to throw and die faster on rough freight.

Space is the other constraint. Chains want a rack or a box where they can be pulled without unstacking everything. Straps want to be rolled and hung, not thrown loose. Tarps want a spot where they can be tossed wet without soaking the rest of the kit. A driver who has to unbury gear to use it will skip the re-tension checks, arrive at shippers underprepared, and eventually leave something on a shoulder.
