Every week a driver asks the desk some version of the same question: is the big Garmin worth it, or is the regular one enough? It sounds like a spec question. It is actually a cab question. The two units run the same routing engine, the same map data, the same truck profile logic — which means the entire decision comes down to glass, mounting real estate, and how your eyes actually use a screen at highway speed. Get that part wrong and the step-up unit becomes an expensive way to block a defroster vent.
Where did the OTR710 and OTR1010 go?
First, the naming housekeeping, because search results are still full of the old numbers. The dezl OTR710 and OTR1010 were Garmin's 7-inch and 10-inch truck navigators for several years, and plenty of them are still velcroed to dashboards doing honest work. Garmin has since refreshed the line: the current units are the dezl OTR820 at 8 inches and the dezl OTR1020 at 10 inches. If you are comparing the 710 against the 1010 today, you are comparing two units the lineup has moved past — the honest comparison in 2026 is 820 versus 1020, and that is the one this post makes. Everything below about screen size, mounting, and cab fit applied to the old pair too; the routing features are simply a generation newer now.
What is identical between the two units?
More than the spec sheets suggest. Both units route off the same vehicle profile — height, weight, length, trailer count, hazmat class — and both carry the full North American map onboard, so a detour in a Highway 17 dead zone gets recalculated without asking a cell tower for permission. Both pull the same driver-sourced parking and dock ratings, and both offer the aerial satellite view of a receiver's yard that has talked more than one driver out of a blind-side gate. Both pair with the dezl phone app for live traffic, weather, and wind alerts on route.
That last point matters for how you should read this comparison: you are not buying better routing when you step up. A low bridge avoided on the 1020 is avoided identically on the 820. What does the 10-inch screen actually buy you?
Three real things, and one thing drivers only discover after mounting it.
- Glance distance. A truck dash puts the mount farther from your eyes than a car does. At that distance, the 1020's extra glass means street names, lane guidance, and clearance warnings read in a half-second glance instead of a full look. Over an 11-hour day, shorter glances are not a comfort feature — they are eyes-on-road time.
- Portrait orientation. The OTR1020 mounts landscape or portrait. Portrait mode shows you dramatically more of the road ahead on the map — the next three decisions instead of the next one. Drivers running unfamiliar lanes week over week tend to fall in love with this and never rotate it back.
- Built-in PrePass alerts. The 1020 carries weigh station and bypass alerts onboard. Worth knowing: PrePass coverage is a US network, so a carrier running mostly Ontario and Quebec lanes should weight this feature close to zero, while a cross-border operation running I-75 or I-90 every week should not.
The discovered-later item: split-screen views — map plus upcoming-exit services, map plus trip data — are genuinely usable on 10 inches and cramped on smaller glass. If you like a dense information display, the big unit is where that preference stops costing you map area.
Where does the big screen work against you?
The 1020's footprint is real. Ten inches of glass plus the magnetic mount claims a serious patch of windshield or dash, and in a daycab with a shallow dash it will end up fighting the defroster vent, a sun visor sweep, or your sightline to the right mirror. Provincial and state law on windshield obstruction is written for exactly this kind of hardware: the unit must not block the swept area of the windshield or your view of the road. Mounted low and left, it is a non-issue; the point is the 1020 gives you fewer legal places to put it.
Glare and heat also scale with glass. A bigger panel catches more low-angle sun through a west-facing windshield at 19:00, and it soaks up more July dashboard heat when parked. Neither is disqualifying; both are physics the small unit simply has less of.
Which unit fits which operation?
Take the OTR820 if you run a daycab, your dash is already hosting an ELD display and a phone, or your lanes are mostly regional and familiar. The 8-inch glass is still generous — a full size class up from the 7-inch units most drivers came from — and it mounts places the 1020 physically cannot. It is also the unit we suggest for slip-seat operations, where hardware gets moved between trucks and a smaller footprint survives the shuffle better.
Take the OTR1020 if you are long-haul in a sleeper with dash real estate to spare, you run unfamiliar lanes where the portrait view's extra look-ahead earns its keep, or you cross the border weekly and will actually use the PrePass alerts. When drivers on our board ask, the desk answer is a question back: show me where it mounts. If there is a clean spot low on the windshield or on a dash pod where 10 inches blocks nothing — sleeper cabs usually have one — the 1020 is the better long-haul tool, and portrait mode alone justifies it for unfamiliar-lane work. If the honest answer is that it would crowd a vent, a visor, or a sightline, the 820 is not the compromise choice; it is the correct one. The routing brain you are actually buying is the same either way. The glass only earns its place when the cab has a place for it.
